“The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.”
A School for Skeptics
Volta is a microschool for grades 6–12 designed for curious minds and independent spirits. We aim to cultivate personal agency and self-knowledge by exploring philosophy, naturalism, and communication. Students thrive when they’re encouraged to think deeply, ask bold questions, and chart their own course.
Here at Volta, learning is both rigorous and human-centered. We blend classic teaching methods — like direct instruction and Socratic dialogue—with hands-on projects, independent studies, and web-based learning. Students pursue core academics at their own pace, with room to explore personal interests in depth. It’s not about choosing one path — it’s about building your own.
We believe education should be flexible, thoughtful, and grounded in reality. That’s why our curriculum draws from a wide range of pedagogical traditions — not exclusive to any one method but borrowing the best from many to create a balanced, responsive learning environment.
“The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.”

Daily independent reading time encourages focus and reflection
Weekly field trips connect classroom learning to the wider world and provide time in nature
Physical fitness and mindful awareness exercises are embedded in the routine
The student body functions as a single team, creating a supportive environment
“Education is the ability to listen to almost anything without losing your temper or your self-confidence.”

Our Mission
To create an environment where youth are:
Encouraged to be curious;
Empowered to follow knowledge;
Equipped to seek and discern truth;
Exposed to the natural world;
Engaged with their own development;
Entrusted to make choices;
Equally valued as members of a single team.
